Retailers eat your babies.
I remembered today an incident that went on at the till next to mine one day back at my (old) shop job. A woman had bought four or five items, totalling between 20 and 30 pounds sterling. She complained quite rudely and repeatedly about the ridiculously high cost of the clothing in the shop, and that ‘it’s not this expensive at Primark.’
Being in customer service means you have to supress a lot of verbal smack-downs that people are normally quite deserving of, and I remember there was a number of points I wanted to make to the woman, in order of ascending importance:
1. Why aren’t you shopping at Primark then, instead of being here making my day miserable?
2. If you don’t think the clothes are worth the money we charge, don’t fucking buy them.
and, most significantly,
3. At least our company isn’t built on the bones of it’s infant labourers.
I guess it’s only human nature that people are ruled by their own desires, which causes them to speak out against a possible and minor injustice to themselves, but ignore the consequent huge and disgusting injustices to hundreds of others by the same industry.
